NDA 2020 Application Form, Eligibility, Exam Dates, Syllabus, Exam Pattern

T he NDA 2020 Application Form was released on 8th January 2020. The exam will be conducted by UPSC, Union Public Service Commission. UPSC NDA entrance exam 2020 is a gateway for the candidates who wish to make their career in Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. This national level test is held twice (NDA I and NDA II) every year in the months of April and November. Candidates need to qualify the written test with the minimum qualifying marks and then appear for the SSB Interview round for getting admitted into NDA. After the candidate has cleared SSB round then the qualified candidates need to go through the medical examination and document verification process for final admission.   • Candidates who are applying for NDA 2020 need to be a citizen of India/ subject of Bhutan/subject of Nepal or Refugee of Tibetan (came to India before 1st January 1962 with the intention to settle permanently in India).

  • Candidates with Indian origin who were migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and east African countries of Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with an intention of settling in India are also eligible to  apply.

  • All the applying foreign nationals have to produce a certificate of eligibility issued by the Govt. of India. Gorkhas (subjects of Nepal) need not be required to produce this certificate.

Gender, Age and Marital Status:

  • Gender: Only males are eligible to apply in NDA 2020.

  • Age: Age must be between 16.5 – 19.5 years of the candidate. He should be born between July 2, 2001 and July 1, 2004 for NDA I. For NDA II, he must be born between 2nd January 2002 and 1st January 2005.

  • Marital Status: Candidate must be unmarried to be eligible for applying to NDA 2020. Candidates cannot marry until their training is complete.

Educational Qualification:

  • For Air Force and Naval Wings (Cadet Entry Scheme): Candidates need to pass their 10th and 12th level examinations from a recognized board or university with subjects like Physics and Mathematics.

  • For Army Wing of National Defense Academy: Candidates need to pass their 10th and 12th level exams from a recognized board or university.

  • Appearing Candidates: Candidates who are in their last  year of qualifying are also eligible to apply for NDA 2020.

Physical Eligibility:

  • Applying candidates must be physically fit, as per the physical standards set by the commission for admission into Naval Academy Examination and National Defence Academy.


The Syllabus of NDA contains topics from the subjects of Mathematics, English and General Knowledge. Whole syllabus can be checked by the students by online mode on their website.

Below we have provided various topics included various subjects coming in the written test:


Matrices and Determinants, Analytical Geometry of two and three Dimensions, Algebra, Vector Algebra,  Trigonometry, Integral calculus and Differential Equations, Differential Calculus, Statistics and Probability, 


English paper is designed for testing the candidate’s understanding of English and workman-like use of words. The syllabus covers various aspects like: Vocabulary, comprehension, Grammar and usage and cohesion in extended text to test the candidate’s proficiency in English

General Knowledge:

General Knowledge paper broadly cover topics from the subjects: Physics, Chemistry, General Science, Geography, Social Service and Current Events.


  • Exam Mode and Date: NDA I exam is going to be held on 19th April 2020 and NDA II will be held on 6th September 2020. Exam will be conducted in (offline) mode.

  • Type of Questions: Objective type (MCQS).

  • Total Marks: Total 900 marks (Mathematics – 300; General Ability test – 600). SSB Interview will be of 900 marks separately.

  • Sections: The written test of NDA 2020 will be divided into two sections – i.e, Mathematics and General Ability test.

  • Language Medium: The question paper will be in English as well as Hindi language.

  • Time Duration: The time duration provided to the candidates to complete the paper will be 5  hours (2½ hours each).

  • Marking Scheme: 0.33% of the mark assigned to the question is  deducted for every incorrect answer.


Cut off marks will be published by the board after the declaration of the results of NDA 2020. Candidate needs to qualify the written test for becoming eligible for further admission process.


Once the written test of NDA 2020 is completed, candidates who manage to qualify the exam successfully are called for the SSB interview round for NDA 2020. The SSB interview round is conducted in various rounds in five days and the candidates who are selected have to appear in all the rounds.

First day of the SSB Interview candidate will go through psychological tests which will include – Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT), Intelligence test and filling up of Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) forms.

Second day of the SSB interview includes the tests related to – Word Association test, situation reaction test, thematic apperception test and self-description test.

Third day of the interview is related to Group Discussion Test, Military Planning Exercise, Lecturettes, Intergroup Obstacle race or Snake race, Progressive Group Task, half group task, command task and personal interview for some candidates by the President.

Fourth and fifth day includes tests related to Individual Obstacles , Interview for remaining candidates, final group task,  final board conference and announcement of results.


  • The application form of the NDA 2020 has been released on 8th January 2020 and for NDA II the application form will be available from 10th June 2020.

  • The candidates have to fill the application form of NDA in two parts – Part I and Part II.

  • In the Part I of the application process, candidates need to fill their basic and other important details in the form.

  • In the Part II of application process, candidates need to select their exam center, upload their photograph and signature, pay the application fee and confirm the declaration.

  • After the final submission of the application form of NDA 2020, candidates need to take the printout of the application form, fee payment and identical photograph as uploaded in the application.
