HSEE 2020 – IIT Madras released its entrance examination HSEE 2020 date and brochure for Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) 2020. The examination will be held on April 19, 2020, for admission of eligible candidates in M.A Developmental Studies and M.A English. Online registration for the exam starts on December 11, 2019. Both national and foreign candidates can apply for the exam. HSEE is a national level entrance examination conducted to fill 52 M.A seats. In both courses, IIT offers 26 seats each. Candidates can check all the important dates of HSEE 2020 from the table mentioned below.

The Eligibility Criteria for HSEE 2020 is mentioned below-

Qualifications Required: Candidates who wish to apply for HSEE 2020 must be eligible for the Exam-

  • Candidate should have cleared 10+2, by a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

  • Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy.  

  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.  

  • Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or in a foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.  H.S.C. vocational examination.

  • Class XII skill courses of CBSE.  

  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.

  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

Age Limit : Candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1994 are eligible for HSEE 2020. However, in the case of SC, ST and PwD candidates, upper age limit is relaxed by 5 years, i.e., candidates belonging to SC, ST, and PwD and born on or after October 01, 1989 are eligible. 

NOTE : Candidates who have completed Class XII (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities that says the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination.


HSEE-2020 is divided into two parts: 

Part I and Part II. Part I syllabus of HSEE 2020 consists of English (25% marks of Part I), Analytical and Quantitative Ability (25% marks of Part I), and General Studies (in four sub-parts; 50% marks of Part I). Part II consists of essay writing.


  •  English and Comprehension skill : This section tests is conducted to check candidate’s ability to understand and use standard English, and to appreciate literary language. Questions are related to the following areas: 

  • Reading skills: Candidates will be given a passage to read to test their comprehension skills and answer the comprehension questions. 

  • Grammar: This section checks the candidate’s knowledge of English grammar including sentence structure and usage, verb patterns, use of tenses, articles, and active etc. 

  • Vocabulary: This section checks the vocabulary and the ability to understand the meaning, structure and collocation of words. 

Analytical and Quantitative Ability : This section checks the candidate’s analytical skills and quantitative abilities. The questions are of following areas such as: Numbers, Algebra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Calendar, Basic Statistics – Average Profit and Loss, Ratio and proportion, Percentages, Simple and Compound Interest, Work and time Age sums, discount,  linear equations, elementary trigonometry. Data interpretation, Analytical reasoning, Logical reasoning, Brainteasers, and Patterns.

  • General Studies : This section consists of the following topics

  • Indian Economy

  • Indian Society and Culture

  • World Affairs

  • Environment and Ecology


Topics for the essay writing in Part II will be on current affairs and general knowledge. The essay should build an argument to demonstrate a clear perspective and be substantiated with examples, if possible.


The exam pattern of HSEE 2020 is mentioned below:

Parts: The exam has two parts I and II

Duration: The exam is of 3 hours, candidates get 2 hours and 30 minutes to attempt Part I and 30 minutes for Part 2.

  • Candidates with more than 40% disability physical disability gets 40 minutes 1 hours extra.

Language: The question paper of HSEE is only printed in the English language.

HSEE 2020 Result is declared by (IIT) Madras. Candidates can check the HSEE 2020 Result from the official website with their Registered Email -ID/Login ID and Password. Results of HSEE 2020 Results is expected to be released in the 3rd week of May 2020.A common rank list is prepared for those who score at least 50% in HSEE 2020 and Separate rank lists are prepared corresponding to OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD categories. Candidate who scores higher aggregate marks receives a better rank.

Merit List : Merit List of HSEE 2020 is prepared on the basis of marks scored by candidates in HSEE 2020. Candidates who qualifies the examination and meets the Cut-off are added in the Merit List and are considered eligible for proceeding with the Admission.

Cut off : Candidates need to score minimum 50% marks in order to qualify the exam of HSEE 2020. However, separate Rank Lists are prepared for OBC-NCL, SC, ST and PwD categories.  

  • Candidates belonging to OBC-NCL category needs to score at least 45% in order to be in the OBC-NCL rank list. 

  • Candidates belonging to SC and ST categories needs to score 25% in order to be in their respective rank lists. 

  • To be in the PwD rank list, candidates needs to score at least 25% in aggregate. Separate PwD rank lists will be prepared corresponding to OBC-NCL, SC and ST categories
